Sandoval County Democratic
Party May 2009
Newsletter |
|
I want to first start off by
saying that I am so proud to be a Sandoval
County Democrat. Thank you all for
volunteering, attending and making President
Obama's visit to Sandoval County so successful.
I cannot say enough about the hard work and
dedication of all of you. You make my job of
Chairman very easy and all credit for the
attention that we received in the press and
among Democratic officials goes to each of you.
You step up to the plate and swing for the
fences every time. You are making this Party
successful, keep it up and we have more work to
do.
This month's newsletter contains
information on President Obama's visit, an
introduction to Arman Salehian the new leader
of the Young Democrats of Sandoval County,
upcoming events, an update on the Spring State
Central Committee Meeting, and the "Ask the
Chairman" section in the
newsletter.
Please feel free to
contact either myself at iniego70@yahoo.com
or Yasine Armstrong at yasinem@gmail.com
if you have information or upcoming events
you'd like us to include in the next
newsletter.
Sincerely, David
Montoya, Chairman Sandoval County Democratic

High School |
|
President Obama's visit was a
historic moment for Sandoval County and we are
proud of all of the people who worked so hard
to make the event a huge success.
Isidoro
Herrera, a representative from AFT New
Mexico and the AFL-CIO, asks President Obama
about the Employee Free Choice Act and how we
can get it passed.
Over 2,000
people attended the town hall meeting and the
Rio Rancho High School gym was filled to its
capacity.

Successful Spring State
Central Committee
Meeting |
|
April 2009 - Spring State
Central Committee
Update: Sandoval
County was represented in both the 1st and 3rd
Congressional Delegation. Our 28 Delegates were
represented at 100%. Delegates with conflicts
or that had to leave early left their proxies.
This is significant as many counties weren't
fully represented. Thank you to all State
Central Committee members for you participation
and support throughout the State Democratic
Convention!
Tom Buckner was
unanamously re-elected to serve another two
year term as Treasurer of the State Democratic
Party. He will join Chairman Brian Colon for
another term as NM Democratic Party Chair.
David McGuffie was also elected to the State
Affirmative Action Committee.
Congrats
to both our state party officials!

Young Democrats of Sandoval
County |
|
Hello, my name is Arman
Salehian President of UNM College Democrats and
interested in rebuilding the Young Democrats of
Sandoval County.On November 4th 2008, the youth
turned out in record numbers for now President
Barack Obama. In doing so, we made
history and changed the political landscape as
we know it. 68% of people 18-35 voted for
Barack Obama and delivered the strongest
mandate for change our country has seen in
decades. The hard work and sacrifice made
during the campaign paid off.
But
the hard work and sacrifice doesn't end here.
Like President Obama said: "this victory alone
is not the change we seek - it is only the
chance for us to make that
change." Today's students stand strong as
the next generation of concerned citizens and
leaders - ready to continue the progressive
causes we believe in. As College Democrats, we
recognize the importance of public service and
political participation in order to deliver the
change our country needs. Fellow Democrats,
change is coming and we are the beginning of
that change.
The first organizational
meeting for the Young Demcrats of Sandoval
County will be on June 3 at 7pm at the Flying
Star in Corrales.See you there!

Voter Registration Effort -
Elaine
Sullivan |
|
Dear Sandoval
County Democrats, I am working with the
Sandoval County Democratic Party to have
ongoing voter registration targeting new
democratic voters and I'd like to request your
help in this effort.
At the present
time, I am compiling a data bank of volunteers
in various areas of the county. To
accomplish this I am working with the
Democratic Women, the Democratic Club,
Democrats for Change and Change for America. I
am looking for people who will sit at a table
several times during the year and register
people to vote. In order to register
people the County requires certification as a
registrar. This is an easy process and I will
work with volunteers to get certified at the
county clerk's office in
Bernalillo. I'd like
suggestions for summer events where a voter
registration table would be appropriate to
setup in different communities throughout the
county. I'd also like ideas on how
to attract new democratic voters. As of now, we
will have voter registration tables are the
Placitas Library, Art in the Park in Corrales
as well as the Harvest Festival and the Labor
Day Wine festival in Bernalillo. We also plan
to have tables outside of Ohares
Resturant and/or the DMV in Rio Rancho and at
the County Fair in Cuba later this
summer. I'd also like to work with
the county party to identify new people that
move into the community and determine how to
get them information about local democrats and
how to register to vote. I hope to
involve ward and precinct captains and
co-captains in this effort. I am
so energized and impressed by the grassroots
efforts that were begun last year and am
excited to see this energy continue and grow to
make our community and beyond a better place
for all. Please call and share
your ideas with me.

Ask the Chairman - David

With so many
Democratic Organizations; Democratic Club,
Democratic Women of Sandoval County, Democrats
for Change, and now County Young Democrats of
Sandoval County how will we be an effective
party? Our
diversity is our strength. Democrats come in
all shapes, sizes and backgrounds it is the
very essence of what makes us Democrats. Each
of these clubs offers their members something
different. The activity and dedication to
Democratic causes and their belief in
Democratic ideals enriches us all.
Communication between members and leadership of
each of these organizations will tighten the
bonds between us. I havedecided to form a
leadership council. This council will be
composed of leaders from each of the
organizations as well as the county party
officers. This body will essentially function
as the county party's board of directors
providing a forum for candidate recruitment,
communication, and strategic leadership of the
party and democratic causes county-wide. Our
first meeting will be on June 3rd at 6:30pm
before the County Young Democratic Meeting at
7pm at the Flying Star in
Corrales.
