Ward E Newsletter – January 4, 2021

It’s finally 2021! The new year starting out great with an inauguration coming soon. We will soon be electing new party leadership as well. Since I am now the president of the Sandoval County Federation of Democratic Women I will not be staying on as your ward leader. Nancy is also stepping down as co-leader. So if you’re interested in leading this ward, which will be divided sometime this year, probably in the summer make sure to attend the ward meeting when it’s announced (I should know when that is very soon and will let you know).

Linda Allison is holding a visibility event on January 20th to celebrate the inauguration. Please contact her at 505-573-2942 or email her at ladem77@gmail.com. If you have Biden/Harris signs left, please bring them.

The Virtual Legislative Dinner is scheduled for January 21st. This is a major event that supports DPNM in electing democrats, as well as functioning and planning throughout the year. Please consider going. Tickets are $100, and it would be great if Sandoval County was well-represented. Contact Heidi Byrd if you have any questions heidi@nmdemocrats.org or

Here is a note from one of our ward members, Lonnie Rowell please read:

Dear Ward E Members,

For the last four legislative sessions, Retake Our Democracy and its allies have watched as one great bill after another passed in the House only to die in the NM State Senate. Most of the Senators who were roadblocks to these bills were defeated in primaries, with the result being a tremendous opportunity in 2021, namely, a Senate ready to pass good bills.

In fact, seven new Democrats will be joining the Senate this year and will constitute over 25% of the entire Democratic Senate caucus. We want to be sure that we engage every Democratic Senator during late December and early January, organizing Zoom meetings with Senators and their constitutes to find out their priorities and share with them ours. The purpose of these meetings is to educate our Senators on issues we care about and identify wherever a Senator opposes one of our bills or has questions about it. We will then connect the Senator with the bill sponsor and/or the organization that is advancing the bill so that they can become better informed.

We are seeking members for the Senate District 22 (Sen. Shendo) Advocacy Team. You do not have to be a policy wonk or especially comfortable persuading others, as there will be many constituents in the zoom meeting and Retake provides detailed bill summaries that can get you up to speed.

Retake Our Democracy has worked for months with a wide range of progressive organizations like NM Voices for Children, Common Cause, and NM Environmental Law Center and has created a slate of 15 Transformational bills we will be supporting in the legislative session that will begin in January. Here is a link to the bills. https://retakeourdemocracy.org/retake-supported-bills-for-2021-legislative-session/.

If you would like to be a member of the Senate District 22 team, please contact one of us right away. (Our emails are shown below.) After we have established our team we will be reaching out to Senator Shendo to set a time for a Zoom meeting in January.
