From the County Chair – November 2024

by | Oct 31, 2024 | Message from the Chair, Newsletters

Hello Democrats!

First, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, if you have not yet voted PLEASE DO SO TODAY! Voting ends on November 5th at 7 p.m. Don’t wait until the last minute to vote. We need you to help bring our Democratic Party candidates over the line. If 2016 taught us anything; it is to not take things for granted. VOTE! Get your family and friends to vote.

If you are able, we are STILL in need of canvassers prior to Election Day. Knocking doors is the most effective way to reach voters. You will be speaking to Democrats who have not yet voted. Email chair@sandovaldemocrats.org, or just stop by the office and pick up a walk list number to enter in your Minivan app. Bring a friend or two!

Democrats are getting it done! As of October 23, 2024, the Democratic Party of Sandoval County has sent 5,000 postcards to registered voters between the ages of 20 and 38 in the urban areas of our county. Vice Chair Suazo and Jannie Dusseau organized the largest Native Outreach Postcard Project we have ever completed by sending 3,000 postcards to residents in the pueblos and chapter houses in Sandoval County. We are in the process of organizing texts to every voter in Sandoval County who has yet to vote. As I mentioned above, WE ARE STILL KNOCKING DOORS AND NEED YOUR HELP!

All of our regular party events will take place in November. First Friday will take place at the Range Café in the Town of Bernalillo at 11 a.m. Our First Friday speaker is Francis Vigil, Indian Education Director, Bernalillo Public School District.

Second Saturday’s featured speaker at M’Tucci’s in Rio Rancho is Senator Fred Harris. Senator Harris will discuss his latest book, “Report From A Last Survivor.”

Fred Harris is the last surviving member of the Kerner Rights Commission, famously created by President Lyndon Johnson following the terrible riots, disorders, and violent protests that exploded in so many of America’s cities in the “long hot summer” of 1967. He is the last survivor of the 1964 “Four Back Bench US Senators,” which consisted of Walter Mondale of Minnesota, Joseph Tydings of Maryland, Fred Harris of Oklahoma, and Robert Kennedy of New York. He is also the senior surviving former member of the US Senate and one of two “last surviving” Democratic presidential candidates to run in 1976—the other being President Jimmy Carter Jr.

Senator Harris’ talks are “must see!” He has an engaging and humorous way of discussing events. I hope you will all attend. There will also be some discussion about election results (fingers crossed)!

Our November Coffee Klatch will be held at DPSC headquarters on Saturday, November 30th at 11 a.m. Coffee and pastries will be available to purchase.

November 12th we will visit Jemez Pueblo for the Feast. We would love for everyone to be there with us.

In lieu of December’s events, we will have an end of year celebration. Like last year, we will have a potluck on December 7th. Please watch your email for more information.

First Friday in January will be cancelled, but we will meet at M’Tucci’s in Rio Rancho on Saturday, January 11th at 11 a.m. The Coffee Klatch in January will be held on January 27th at 11 a.m. at DPSC Headquarters.

Stay strong and stay blue.
Alexandria Piland, DPSC Chair
