This section of our webpage provides a forum for “new voices” to be heard. We envision hearing from and learning about young people, other-abled, people-of-color, LGBTQ2S+, and other Democrats who typically are left out of the political conversations within our county.

New Mexico Primary Results
The June 4 New Mexico Primary has come and gone. The unofficial statewide voter turnout was just under 23%, or a fifth of registered voters. A little more than 1 in 5 eligible voters turned in Bernalillo County, a tally slightly lower than the 2022 primary contest. ...
The first voice to hear from is that of Hailey Fortin. – August 2022
Background Information
Hailey Fortin is a 24-year old white female who resides in Albuquerque. She is a Field Organizer for the Democratic Party Coordinated Campaign, Treasurer for Kathleen Cates, who is a candidate for the NM House in District 44, which is primarily in Sandoval County, and White Water Raft Guide.
Hailey’s passions include Skiing, Rafting, Camping, Thrift Store Shopping and Constitutional Law.
Why Hailey is a Democrat
The Oxford dictionary defines a Democrat as an advocate or supporter of Democracy. I am a Democrat because I believe in the great American experiment. This country has given me ample opportunities to pursue every dream I have ever had. I believe that that freedom and opportunity is unique to the Democratic Party.
Issues Hailey Fortin is Passionate About
I am specifically passionate about Reproductive Rights, Affordable Housing, Environmental Conservation and Young Voters.
Reproductive Rights
With the recent overturning of Roe V. Wade I am especially passionate about getting Democrats elected who will help a birthing person keep the right to choose what they do with their body.
Affordable Housing
Affordable housing projects are also an issue that is close to me because my dad is a nationally renowned green homebuilder. When I moved out of his house, I learned the struggle that people face when trying to pay rent or afford a mortgage. Being a college student and trying to work to pay rent among a multitude of other bills is a struggle that has brought this issue to my life personally.
Environmental Conservation
Finally, environmental conservation is very close to my heart because I am an outdoor athlete. I am a national champion skier in the wintertime and a white water raft guide in the summer. These sports will be extinct before I can teach them to my children unless we get serious about conserving resources and the environment right now.
Young Voters
Another issue that I am passionate about is activating and mobilizing young voters. Lots of people are under the impression that my generation is not politically active or interested. This is simply not the case and this election and in the future it is my intent to prove that we are a force to be reckoned with.
What Can the Democratic Party of Sandoval County (DPSC) Do for Hailey Fortin?
The Democratic Party of Sandoval County has supported me at the highest level. But right now is NOT the time to let off the gas. I need volunteers to walk with me EVERY Saturday until the election. The 2020 election should not have been as close as it was and a factor in that was that the Democratic party did not canvas during COVID. If you cannot walk, we need you to make calls, text, or simply even just be a body at events. There will be an opportunity to volunteer for everyone and the Democratic Party needs your help!
What Can Hailey Do for the DPSC?
I will be leading canvasing events and phone banking events until the election to get every national, state and local Democrat elected!
Hailey’s Future
My future ambition is to run for office. When I started my political science program at the University of New Mexico I realized that I have a real passion for public service and helping people through policy. I plan to start law school in the fall of 2023 to further my background as I prepare to run in the future. I am extraordinarily grateful for the support that Sandoval County has given me and continues to give me. I want to give some special thanks to Alex Piland and Kathleen Cates as they have been my greatest supporters. When I do run, nothing would make me happier than to represent the good people of Sandoval County.
